Disk Drill vs Recuva

This isn't really a free-vs-paid comparison — Disk Drill has its own free tier too. It's a question of recovery depth: is a simple, Windows-only undelete utility enough for the case at hand, or does it need a broader recovery environment that also handles damaged filesystems, lost partitions, RAID, NAS and multiple platforms? Recuva does one job well and doesn't pretend otherwise; Disk Drill does considerably more.

How to read this comparison

Tables below use a small symbol set: confirmed/full, partial or qualified, confirmed absent/not supported. Not confirmed* (abbreviated NC) is a separate, deliberate state — it does not mean "unsupported," only that current official material wasn't specific enough to justify a Yes/No claim.

Recuva's free edition has no size cap — its ceiling is scope, not megabytes. Disk Drill's free tier is capped in size but covers a wider range of damage and storage types.

Normal undelete

Both products start from the same idea: read the surviving filesystem records to find and name recently deleted files. Recuva's normal scan does this well for its target case — a clean, recent, Windows-native deletion — and keeps original filenames because the metadata pointing to them is still present. Disk Drill's Quick Scan covers the same ground and is the entry point into a broader Universal/Smart Scan that combines methods automatically when Quick Scan alone isn't enough.

"Deep Scan" is not the same feature in each product

This pair is a good place to enforce a distinction used throughout this site: a shared feature name doesn't mean a shared mechanism.

Current CleverFiles documentation gives Disk Drill's Deep Scan at least two separately documented mechanisms — Deep Scan (File System), which parses low-level filesystem metadata such as MFT/inodes and can preserve names/folders when that metadata survives, and Deep Scan (File Signatures), which is known-content/signature recovery without the original namespace. Recuva's Deep Scan, per Piriform's own support documentation, is primarily the content/header-based fallback for when normal-scan metadata is gone or unreliable — it recognizes a defined set of file signatures but cannot recover original filenames for anything found only through it.

Calling both "Deep Scan: Yes" would flatten a real mechanism difference into a shared label. Recuva's Deep Scan is a small, built-in version of the same carving approach PhotoRec uses on its own; Disk Drill layers a distinct filesystem-metadata mode on top of a comparable signature mode.

Filesystem scope

Current CleverFiles technical specifications document native scan support across FAT/exFAT, NTFS/NTFS5/ReFS, HFS/HFS+, APFS, and Ext2/3/4/Btrfs — a genuinely cross-platform matrix. Recuva's current public documentation is centered specifically on Windows storage; historical and current material discusses NTFS/FAT/exFAT and some Ext-family behavior in narrower contexts, but nothing in Piriform's current documentation presents Recuva as a cross-platform filesystem-recovery suite the way Disk Drill's own material does. This page keeps that framing rather than constructing an artificially broad Recuva filesystem table.

Fragmentation

Recuva's signature/deleted-file recovery has documented fragmentation limitations, consistent with any content-based fallback scan. Disk Drill also treats fragmentation as a real recovery factor rather than something it eliminates, but its filesystem-aware Deep Scan can use metadata chains where they survive to reassemble a file that pure carving would miss, and Advanced Camera Recovery adds fragment-reconstruction logic specifically for camera/media formats. Neither claim is universal superiority — the mechanism difference is why filesystem metadata can sometimes recover a fragmented file that content-based carving alone cannot.

Imaging

Disk Drill's built-in Byte-to-byte Backup is an image-first workflow: create a complete image of the source and scan/recover from that instead of repeatedly reading the original drive, with Disk Drill 6 documentation adding adaptive backup behavior. Recuva Professional can create, mount and recover from VHD disk images, which is a useful virtual-drive workflow but not a comparable acquisition/imaging feature for a physically unstable source. Neither product is marketed with specialist unstable-drive hardware acquisition; that remains a job for dedicated imaging hardware and a lab workflow either way.

RAID and NAS

Disk Drill documents automatic RAID reconstruction (RAID 0/1/5/6/10/1E, JBOD, Btrfs RAID, Windows Storage Spaces) and remote NAS/Linux recovery over SSH, with automatic RAID reconstruction available during that SSH workflow when member drives are reachable locally. Recuva has no documented RAID reconstruction of any kind and no NAS/remote-recovery workflow — it's built around a single local Windows-readable drive.

Safety

Both products keep their core scan/recovery workflow read-oriented, with a separate, clearly labeled function that writes to the source by design.

Neither product's write-capable feature should be read as a recovery-capability advantage or disadvantage — both are deliberately separate from the recovery workflow itself.

SSD TRIM

Recuva's own documentation is explicit that SSD TRIM can make deleted-file recovery genuinely impossible even when a scan runs cleanly and reports no errors, because TRIM erases the underlying data at the controller level — outside the reach of any recovery software, Disk Drill included. Pricing

Recuva Free has no recovery-size cap; Recuva Professional ($24.95, single license) adds virtual hard drive support, automatic updates and priority support on the same recovery engine — not a deeper one. Disk Drill Free is capped at 100 MB on Windows; Disk Drill PRO ($89/year, or a separate lifetime option) removes the cap and keeps the same RAID/imaging/NAS toolset Free already includes.

When Recuva is enough, and when it isn't

Recuva

Enough for a one-off accidental deletion on a healthy Windows drive, where the free edition already does the recovery itself. Pro's extras (virtual drives, auto-updates, priority support) matter more if this is something used repeatedly than if it's a single incident.

Justified once the case involves a damaged or formatted filesystem beyond simple deletion, a lost partition, a RAID array, a NAS, a Mac or Linux-formatted drive, encrypted BitLocker storage, or a source unstable enough to need imaging first.
